Chicago State Volleyball Upends Central Michigan 3-1

Close Out NDSU Tournament 1-1

Box Score The Chicago State volleyball team beat Central Michigan 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the Benston Bunker Fieldhouse in Fargo, North Dakota during the second day of the NDSU Tournament. The Cougars won by scores of 25-15, 25-12, 17-25 and 25-22. Yanlis Feliz led all players with 18 kills, Mesalina Severino was the match's hitting leader, checking in at .562, Feliz led in attacks with 41 and Mesalina Severino led in blocks with 6.

Feliz was named the NDSU Tournament MVP and was joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Mesalina Severino and Berenice Almeyda. Both Chicago State and Central Michigan finished tournament play with 1-1 records while host NDSU went 2-1, playing an extra match against Montana State. Northern Arizona was originally scheduled to round out the tournament field but had to cancel.

Game One - Chicago State: 25, Central Michigan: 15
Central Michigan opened the scoring on a CSU service error
The Cougars responded with a Yanlis Feliz kill and an attack error to take a 2-1 lead
The teams exchanged points and were tied 7-7 before CSU reeled off six straight points and 15 of 16 scores to take a commanding 22-8 lead
CMU went on a 6-0 run to close the gap to 23-15
The Cougars closed the game with a CMU service error and Whitney Barnes kill for the win
Julieta Sandez led Chicago State with four kills

Game Two - Chicago State: 25, Central Michigan: 12
Chicago State jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a pair of Mesalina Severino kills
Central Michigan scored two consecutive points to pull within one, but still trailed 4-3
The Cougars then scored eight of the next nine points highlighted by a pair of Yanlis Feliz kills to lead 12-4
CMU earned three of the next four points to pull within six, 13-7
CSU went on an 8-2 run to go up 21-9 highlighted by two Feliz service aces
The Cougars closed out the match on an attack error and service error by Central Michigan
Yanlis Feliz leads all players with eight kills

Game Three - Central Michigan: 25, Chicago State: 17 
The teams traded points in the early part of the match before Chicago State scored six of seven points to get out to a 9-6 lead
Central Michigan countered with a pair of points and the Cougars matched to lead 11-8
At that point, CMU went on an 11-2 run to lead 19-13 and recorded four kills to extend the advantage to 24-15
CMU closed the match on an Ezgi Dokuzlar attack error

Game Four - Chicago State: 25, Central Michigan: 22
Central Michigan jumped out to an 8-4 lead hoping to push the match to a fifth and deciding game
The Cougars responded of three points, two of which came on Severino kills to close the game to 8-7
With the match tied at 15, CSU reeled off five consecutive points to gain a 20-15 advantage
Following a CMU point, Severino had a block, followed by a Central Michigan attack error and block assist from Felis and Sandez for a 23-16 lead
Feliz had a kill to push the match to set point, 24-17
Central Michigan reeled off five consecutive points to stave off elimination and push the score to 24-22
Feliz finished CMU with a kill and a 25-22, 3-1 win

With the win, the Cougars improved to 3-6 and will travel to East Lansing, Michigan next weekend to compete in the Green and White Classic hosted by Michigan State. Chicago State will face Evansville Friday, September 16 at 2:30 p.m. then Michigan State Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and Oakland at 5:30 p.m.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioningm to NCAA Division I in 1994. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
