Detroit Mercy scored a goal in each half, both by Rocco Galati, and the Titans defeated Chicago State 2-1 in men's soccer Thursday afternoon at Titan Field in Detroit.
Chicago State was the aggressor early, attempting six shots to Detroit Mercy's one, but both only managed one shot on goal and the Titans broke through in the 34th minute on Galati's first goal to give UDM a 1-0 lead.
Galati found the back of the net again about three minutes into the second half, scoring at the 47:47 mark to extend the lead to 2-0.Â
Chicago State cut the lead in half in the 83rd minute when
Danail Sergiev scored on a shot in the lower left corner an CSU had seven minutes to tie and extend the match but the Titans turned back the Cougars and half on for the 2-1 win. Chicago State did manage some pressure and outshot the Titans 15-7 but Detroit Mercy held a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal and a 2-1 advantage on the scoreboard.
Next up for the Cougars will be a trip to Louisville, Kentucky to take on Bellarmine University on Monday, September 5 at Owsley B. Frazier Stadium at 1 p.m.

Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach
Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
