Three Cougars Score in Double Figures in Loss Against Ball State

MUNCIE, IN - The Chicago State women's basketball team took on the Ball State Cardinals and suffered a 53-119 loss.

Three Cougars scored in double figures as Tae'Lor Willard finished with 19 points, while Ahlea Myers tallied 13, and Janiah Newell posted up 11.

First Quarter - Ball State 34, Chicago State 17

  • The Cardinals opened up the scoring with a trey early on
  • Nonetheless, the Cougars came right back and scored their own trey, courtesy of Willard
  • This early exchange set a back-and-forth scoring trend up to a 12-10 lead for the Cardinals
  • It was at this moment that Ball State suddenly erupted with 14-0 run which gave them a very large lead at 24-12
  • The Cougars managed to score five as Yzabelle Tevao and Myers found the basket, however the Cardinals maintained their lead at 34-17

Second Quarter - Ball State 62, Chicago State 26

  • The Cardinals opened up the second with a 3-0 run and continued in the lead with a 37-17 score
  • Chicago State managed to score as Janiah Newell hit one of her two free throws to reach a score of 18-37
  • However, Ball State continued to dominate as they outscored the Cougars 25-8 from this point to gain an immense lead of 62-26 heading into the half

Third Quarter - Ball State 90, Chicago State 40

  • The Cardinals opened up the quarter with yet another run, this one at 7-0 to reach a score of 69-26
  • Fortunately, Willard cut the run with a beautiful trey for the Cougars as they now trailed by forty at 29-69
  • The quarter was more level than the first two as both teams were able to score back-and-forth
  • Unfortunately, it meant no comeback opportunity for the Cougars as they managed to score but not defend with Ball State leading 90-40 heading into the final quarter

Fourth Quarter - Ball State 119, Chicago State 53

  • The Cougars opened up the scoring as Tevao drove in a layup to reach a score of 42-90
  • Nonetheless, Ball State managed to regain their momentum and ended up outscoring the Cougars 29-11, sealing their victory at the final buzzer with a score of 119-53

The Cougars next take on Central Michigan University on New Year's Day at 12 P.M.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
