Three Cougars Score in Double Figures in Loss at Central Michigan

Cougars Back on the Road Tuesday at Norfolk State

Three Chicago State women's basketball players scored in double figures in an 80-62 loss at Central Michigan Sunday afternoon at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Michigan. The Cougars outscored the Chippewas by two in the second quarter and trailed by seven at the half, but Central Michigan doubled the lead in the third quarter and extended by four in the fourth for the 18-point win. 

Tae'lor Willard led Chicago State with 15 points. She was one of three players in double figures while Ahlea Myers came off the bench to add 13 and Janiah Newell scored 12.

The next action for the Cougars will be Tuesday, January 3 at 6 p.m. at Norfolk State. The game will be the first between the two schools.

1st Quarter - Central Michigan 26, Chicago State 17
Central Michigan opened the game with a 7-0 run in the first 2:20 of the game
Yzabelle Laualofa Tevao opened the scoring for CSU with a layup at the 7:27 mark
Janiah Newell scored during a 6-2 CMU run and the score was 13-4 at the 5:46 mark
Tae'lor Willard and Ahlea Myers converted threes on back-to-back CSU possessions to cut the lead to four, 16-12, at the 3:52 mark
Janiah Newell then converted a free throw, missing the second and Jacia Cunningham grabbed the rebound and fed Tevao who scored and Central Michigan led by just one, 16-15, with 2:52 remaining in the first quarter
At that point, Central Michigan went on a 10-0 run to close out the quarter with Princess Hester making a layup with 12 seconds remaining and Chicago State trailing 26-17

2nd Quarter - Chicago State 14, Central Michigan 12
CMU extended the lead to 12 early in the second quarter and CSU cut the deficit to nine on two occasions, following buckets by Hester and Newell
Trailing by 12 at the 6:02 mark, Tavao converted a pair of free throws and a jumper to cut the lead to eight, 36-28, then, following a CMU score, Jacia Cunningham made three free throws to cut the lead to seven, 38-31, at the 1:59 mark and neither team would score for the remainder of the quarter 

3rd Quarter - Central Michigan 18, Chicago State 11
Cunningham opened the scoring in the second half, scoring on a fast break and CMU's lead was just five, 38-33, at the 9:43 mark
Central Michigan then broke open what was a close game with a 14-2 run over the next six minutes to push the lead to 17, 52-35, with 3:29 remaining in the third
The Cougars scored the last three points of the quarter and trailed by 14 after three quarters, 56-42

4th Quarter - Central Michigan 24, Chicago State 20
The Cougars cut the margin to 10 on two occasions and trailed 61-51 with 7:37 remaining in the game
Central Michigan went on a 7-2 run, snapped by a Myers bucket and CMU's lead was 68-56 at the 4:46 mark
The Chippewas then put the game away with a 14-2 run and led by 22 with 1:19 remaining

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
