Janiah Newell and Jacia Cunningham Score in Double Figures in Loss to Florida Atlantic

Cougars Back on the Road Wednesday at Green Bay

The Chicago State women's basketball team lost to Florida Atlantic 73-56 Monday afternoon at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Cougars bridged an 11-0 run from the first quarter into the second and led by four, 19-15, but only managed one free throw for the remainder of the quarter and trailed by 13 at the break. Florida Atlantic extended the lead to as many as 23 in the second half and tied a season high with 23 free throws made.

Janiah Newell led Chicago State with 16 points and Jacia Cunningham was the only other player in double figures with 15. Taylor Norris led the Cougars with seven rebounds and Newell also led in assists with three.

The next action for the Cougars will be Wednesday, December 21 at 7 p.m. at the University of Green Bay. The Phoenix enter the week with a 7-3 record following a 63-49 win at Illinois State last Sunday. The Phoenix are 3-0 at home this season which includes a 70-60 win over Wisconsin. 

1st Quarter - Florida Atlantic 15, Chicago State 12
The Cougars opened the scoring with a Janiah Newell layup for a quick 2-0 lead
The next eight points all came via the charity stripe with each team shooting 4-for-4 and CSU led 6-4 at the 6:08 mark
Florida Atlantic then went on a 7-0 run to jump out to a five-point lead, 11-6 with 3:58 left in the first quarter
Ahlea Myers nailed a jumper to stop the run and the lead was three, 11-8 at the 3:30 mark
FAU's next four points came via the free throw line and their lead was their largest of the game, seven points, 15-8 at 1:24
Chicago State finished the quarter with a 4-0 run on buckets by Jacia Cunningham and Janiah Newell and the quarter ended with the Owls leading 15-12

2nd Quarter - Florida Atlantic 18, Chicago State 8
The Cougars extended their run into the second quarter, scoring the first seven points on buckets by Cunningham (2) and Josie Hill for an overall 11-0 run to go up 19-15 with 7:35 left in the second quarter
CSU then went on a scoring drought and the Owls took advantage with a 16-0 run over 4:43 and 18-1 to end the quarter and CSU trailed by 13, 33-20

3rd Quarter - Florida Atlantic 25, Chicago State 22
The Owls started the scoring with a pair of free throws and the lead was 15, 35-20, at the 9:26 mark
The teams then traded baskets on hoops by Taylor Norris, Jacia Cunningham and Josie Hill and the deficit was 14, 40-26, with 7:13 left in the third
Florida Atlantic then started hitting from distance with an 11-2 run, making three threes in four trips down the floor and opened up the lead to 23, 51-28 at the 4:56 mark
CSU then went on a modest 6-0 run on buckets by Hill and Norris and a pair of Cunningham free throw and FAU led 53-34 at the 2:52 mark
Following an FAU "and one," the Cougars finished the third quarter with a 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 16 on a pair of Norris layups and a pair of free throws each by Myers and Newell, FAU leading 58-42

4th Quarter - Florida Atlantic 15, Chicago State 14
Janiah Newell started the scoring in the fourth to cut the lead to 14, 58-44
Following a 5-0 FAU run, CSU responded with a 7-0 run on hoops by Myers and Newell (2) and a Myers free throw and the lead was just 12, 63-51 with 5:59 remaining to play
The Owls then went on a 10-2 run and led by 20, 73-53, with under a minute to play
Jacia Cunningham finished the game with three free throws and the final score, 73-56

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
