Laura Segues Scores a Career High 22 Points in Loss to Western Michigan

Three Cougars in Double Figures in 101-73 Loss

The Chicago State women's basketball lost to Western Michigan 101-73 Saturday at the Jones Convocation Center in Chicago. The Broncos led by 12 at the half and 11 with 7:05 remaining in the third quarter but a 14-2 spurt left the Cougars playing catch up for the remainder of the game.

Laura Segues contributed a season and career high 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting including 3-of-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Janiah Newell had 12 and Tae'lor Willard 11 were the only other Cougars in double figures.

The CSU women will be back in action Monday, December 19 at 3 p.m. at home against Florida Atlantic University at the Jones Convocation Center. Florida Atlantic is 7-1 this season which includes a 1-1 record on the road. Monday's game will be the first meeting between the two schools.

1st Quarter - Western Michigan 28, Chicago State 18
Western Michigan opened the game with a 12-3 run in the first four and half minutes of the game with Jack Cunningham converting a three for CSU's points
Laura Segues stopped the run with a layup, the first two of her 10 first-quarter points
The Broncos scored on back-to-back trips before a Segues three and the score was 16-8 at the 3:51 mark
Western Michigan scored the next seven to go up 15, 23-8, with 2:24 remaining in the first quarter
The Cougars closed the quarter with a 7-0 run on a three and a jumper by Segues and a layup by Taylor Norris and the Western Michigan was 10, 28-18, at the end of the first quarter

2nd Quarter - Western Michigan 23, Chicago State 21
The Broncos opened the scoring with a three before the Cougars went on an 8-3 run on buckets by Newell, Willard (2) and Segues and the Western Michigan lead was eight, 34-26, at the 7:05 mark
Following a Broncos basket, Yzabelle Laualofa Tevao made a free throw and Willard a jumper and CSU cut the lead to seven, 36-29, with 6:01 left in the second quarter
Western Michigan responded with a 5-0 run and the lead was back to double figures, 41-29, at the 4:53 mark
11 of the final 20 points of the quarter came via free throws, seven for Western Michigan and four for CSU and the Broncos halftime lead was 12, 51-39

3rd Quarter - Western Michigan 26, Chicago State 11
Chicago State opened the scoring with a pair of free throws and a modest 6-5 run to cut the lead to 11, 56-45, at the 7:05 mark
The Broncos pulled away over the next four minutes, outscoring CSU 14-2 and their lead was the largest of the game, 23 points, 70-47, with 3:18 remaining in the quarter
Western Michigan extended the lead to 27 following a CSU free throw and it was 75-48 following a 5-0 run
The Broncos finished the quarter with a pair of free throws and outscored CSU 26-11 in the quarter to lead by 27, 77-50

4th Quarter - Western Michigan 24, Chicago State 23
Western Michigan opened the scoring with a pair of free throws before Segues hit a three and layup for Chicago State and the score was 81-55 Broncos with 8:33 remaining 
The teams exchanged hoops for much of the quarter with Western Michigan outscoring CSU by one in the quarter, 24-23, for the eventual 28-point win

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
