The Chicago State men's basketball team fell to Southern Illinois 63-52 Friday night at the Banterra Center in Carbondale. The Salukis led by just six at the halftime break and Chicago State came back to lead briefly at the 15:48 mark of the second half but SIU went on a modest run and continued to slowly pull away for the 11-point win.
Wesley Cardet led Chicago State with 14 points and
Brent Davis was the only other Cougars player in double figures with 11.
Jahsean Corbett led CSU with six rebounds and
Elijah Weaver led in assists with three.
The next action for the men's basketball team will be Monday, December 19, at 7 p.m. against Illinois State at Redbird Arena in Normal, Illinois. The Redbirds are currently 5-6 and will play Ball State Saturday before hosting the Cougars Monday. Illinois State is 3-2 at home this season.
1st Half - Southern Illinois 32, Chicago State 26
Chicago State began the scoring with a pair of treys by
Elijah Weaver and Jashean Corbett sandwiched by a Saluki layup and CSU led early 6-2
The Cougars failed to score over the next four minutes with the exception of a
Deshawn Jean-Charles and SIU took advantage with a 7-3 run and the game was tied 9-9 at the 13:20 mark
A 5-0 spurt extended SIU's lead to 14-9 at the 11:10 mark
Wesley Cardet made a pair of free throws and SIU a three and it was 17-11 with 8:58 remaining to play
Kedrick Green nailed a three to cut the lead to 17-14
Following a Saluki free throw,
Bryce Johnson hit from distance and the SIU lead was just one, 18-17 at 5:55
The teams then made threes on three consecutive trips, two by SIU and one by CSU (
Brent Davis) and it was 24-20 at the 3:39 mark
Following a pair of Saluki free throws, Davis hit another three to make it 26-23 SIU
Cardet then nailed a three following an SIU turnover and it was tied, 26-26, with 1:53 remaining until the half
CSU would fail to score for the remainder of the half and SIY converted a three and three free throws to lead by six at the half, 32-26
2nd Half - Southern Illinois 31, Chicago State 26
Jahsean Corbett scored the first points of the second half with a layup and
Kedrick Green converted a pair of free throws following an SIU miss and it was 32-30 just over a minute into the second half
The teams then exchanged threes, with
Elijah Weaver hitting from distance to make it 35-33 SIU
Corbett then made a free throw and
Deshawn Jean-Charles made a layup and the Cougars reclaimed the lead since early in the first half, 36-35, at the 15:48 mark
SIU tied then took the lead with two free throws then converted a three to go up 40-36 with 14:55 remaining
Following a Saluki score, Cardet nailed a three to make it 42-39
SIU answered with a three to extend to 45-39 at the 12:05 mark
Chicago State scored their next three points from the free throw line to pull within three, 45-42, at 11:19
The Salukis then went on a 6-0 run and had their largest lead of the game, nine points, 51-42, at 7:55
The teams exchanged free throws and layups on scores by Cardet and Davis and it was 55-47 SIU with 5:47 left to play
The next nine points were scored from the free throw line, six by SIU and three by CSU and the Salukis lead was 61-50 with 2:52 left to play

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
