Two Cougars Score in Double Figures in Loss Against St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, MN - The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the St. Thomas Tommies and suffered a 74-54 loss.

Ahlea Myers finished with 12 points, while Taylor Norris tallied on 10, and Cunningham added on nine.

First Quarter - St. Thomas 23, Chicago State 14

  • The Tommies came out hot and began with a 7-0 run to stun Chicago State early
  • However, Josie Hill was able to hit a beautiful jumper to cut the streak and open up the scoring for the Cougars at 2-7
  • Unfortunately, St. Thomas answered back with a 9-0 run and once again increasing their lead to 16-2
  • Chicago State managed to finish the quarter outscoring the Tommies 12-7 with buckets from Willard, Norris, and Cunningham
  • Nonetheless, the Tommies finished leading by nine at 23-14

Second Quarter - St. Thomas 41, Chicago State 23

  • The Cougars opened up the scoring with a Josie Hill jumper as they now trailed by seven at 16-23
  • The Tommies then answered back with a 10-0 run to once again stun the Cougars and go up 33-16
  • St. Thomas then continued to dominate as they finished the quarter with a 18-point lead at 41-23

Third Quarter - St. Thomas 55, Chicago State 30

  • The Tommies opened up the scoring with a 10-4 rally which gifted them a comfortable lead of 51-29
  • The Cougars would go on to only score one more point in the quarter with a free throw from Laura Segues, as the Tommie scored four more to increase their lead to 55-30

Fourth Quarter - St. Thomas 74, Chicago State 56

  • The Tommies opened up the scoring with a layup to go up 57-30
  • However, the Cougars retaliated with a 7-2 run with a trey from Shelby Clark, and a layup from Hill and Norris
  • Unfortunately, the quarter produced a lot of back-and-forth scoring which meant that the Tommies held their lead at the final buzzer with a score of 74-56

The Cougars come back home on Saturday and will face Western Michigan at 1 P.M.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
