Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Cunningham and Willard Score in Double Figures in Loss Against Minnesota

 

MINNEAPOLIS, MN - The Chicago State women's basketball team faced off against the University of Minnesota and suffered a 105-54 loss.

Despite the loss, two Cougars managed to score in doubled figures as Jacia Cunningham finishes with 14 points, while Tae'lor Willard added on 11, and Janiah Newell and Laura Segues tallied eight each.

First Quarter - Minnesota 28, Chicago State 10

  • The Gophers came out hot and began with an 8-0 run to stun the Cougars and lead early on
  • Chicago State were finally able to open up their scoring as Laura Segues drained a three to reach a score of 3-8
  • However,  Minnesota remained dominant and went on another run at 7-0 to increase their lead to 12 at 15-3
  • With a beautiful driving lay up from Janiah Newell, the Cougars once again snapped the run to trail by 10 at 5-15
  • The Gophers outscored the Cougars 13-5 to finish the quarter and led comfortably at 28-10

Second Quarter - Minnesota 54, Chicago State 30

  • The Cougars opened up the scoring with a 6-0 run with a trey from Ahlea Myers and three points from Newell to reach a score of 16-28
  • However, the Gophers immediately retaliated as they went on an 11-0 run to completely stun the Cougars and go up 39-16
  • Both teams then went on a stretch of back-and-forth scoring which kept the Gophers comfortably in the lead at the half with a 24 point lead with a score of 54-30

Third Quarter - Minnesota 86, Chicago State 44

  • The Cougars began with a deuce from Willard to reach a score of 54-32
  • Nonetheless, the Gophers answered back with a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 61-32
  • Chicago State then managed a 4-2 run with layups from Willard and Yzabelle Tevao
  • Unfortunately, Minnesota retaliated with a 9-2 run to maintain their lead at 72-30
  • The Gophers finished the quarter on a 6-0 run as they comfortably led 86-44 heading into the fourth and final quarter

Fourth Quarter - Minnesota 105, Chicago State 54

  • Chicago State opened up with a jumper from from Willard to trail by 40 at 46-86
  • Minnesota then answered back with a 12-2 run as they're dominance continued to show with a score of 48-98
  • The Cougars finally managed to cut the run with yet another deuce from Willard to reach a score of 50-98
  • Unfortunately for Chicago State, Minnesota comfortably won at the final buzzer with a score of 108-54

The Cougars next take on the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN on December 14th at 7 P.M.

Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
