Cougars Fall by One in Overtime After Trailing by 22 at the Half

CSU Outscores UT-M 41-19 over the Final 20 Minutes of Regulation

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team battled back from a 22-point halftime deficit to force overtime but dropped a 75-74 decision to the University of Tennessee at Martin Sunday at the Kathleen and Tom Elam Center in Martin, Tennessee. The Cougars trailed by just one midway through the first half but went on a scoring drought of over six minutes and the Skyhawks extended a one-point lead to 14, and led at the break by 22, 47-25. The Cougars stormed back with an 11-3 run to start the second half and pulled within two, 59-57, with 7:32 remaining in the game. Brent Davis tied the game with 1:06 left in regulation and, in overtime, CSU had possession, trailing by one with 29 seconds remaining, and played for the win but Jahsean Corbett's layup attempt in traffic bounced out and Wesely Cardet pulled down the offensive board but couldn't get a shot off before time expired.

Chicago State drops to 3-8 while UT Martin improved to 5-5 including a 5-0 record at home. 

Wesley Cardet had 25 in the loss for the Cougars and Jahsean Corbett added 23. Brent Davis was the only other Cougars player in double figures with 12 while Corbett had a team-high 10 rebounds for his team-leading fifth double-double.

The next action for the Chicago State men's basketball team will be Tuesday, December 13 at Murray State at 7 p.m. at the CFSB Center. The Racers enter the contest with a record of 5-4 following a 69-58 loss at Bellarmine Saturday. Chicago State and Murray State have played one time, a Murray State 100-80 victory, at the Pittsburgh Holiday Classic on December 13, 2003.

After exchanging hoops, UT-M goes on a 13-0 run to extend the lead to 14, 31-17, at 7:26

UT-M goes on a 10-1 run to go up 21, lead 41-20 with 3:28 remaining
Following a Cougars free throw and a pair of buckets, the Skyhawks end the half with a 4-0 run to lead by 22 at the half

2nd Half - Tennessee-Martin 19, Chicago State 41
The Cougars came out of the locker room after halftime with an 11-3 run capped by a Brent Davis layup to cut the lead to 50-36 with 15:31 remaining to play
UT-M stopped the run with a three to go back up 17, 53-36, at the 15:11 mark
Bryce Johnson slammed down a dunk and the Skyhawks converted a pair of free throws and, following a Corbett layup, a UT-M layup made the lead 17 once again, 57-40, with 13:40 remaining
Teshaundre Cole hit a turnaround jumper to spark an 8-0 Cougars run and the lead was just nine, 57-48, with 11:23  left to play
Following a pair of Skyhawks free throws to put the lead back to 11, 59-48, Chicago State went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes on buckets by Cardet, Green, Jean-Charles and Davis and the lead was just two, 59-57, with 7:32 remaining
Following a UT-M three, Jean-Charles converted a pair of free throws and the Skyhawks lead was three, 62-59
UT-M made another three but a Cardet score and a Bryce Johnson defensive rebound led to a Corbett layup and the Cougars were within two, 65-63 with 1:38 remaining
UT-M then made one of two free throws to lead by three when Brent Davis tied the game with a long three with 1:06 left to play
Neither team scored in the last 1:06 and went to overtime, tied 66-66

Overtime - Tennessee-Martin 9, Chicago State 8
UT-M made a three to start the extra period and Bryce Johnson answered to know the game 69-69
The teams exchanged buckets before the Skyhawks went on a 4-0 run and led 75-71 with 2:16 left to play
Brent Davis made a three and the UT-M lead was again one, 75-74 at 1:32
Following a UT-M miss and offensive rebound, the Skyhawks missed a jumper and Cardet came away with the rebound but had the ball stolen from behind but UT-M lost the ball out of bounds and CSU had possession, trailing by one, with 29 seconds remaining
The Cougars played for the win but Corbett's layup attempt in traffic bounced out and Cardet pulled down the offensive board but couldn't get a shot off before time expired

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
