Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with an 85-54 loss at Northwestern on Monday, November 7 at Welsh-Ryan Arena in Evanston, Illinois. Chicago State was held scoreless for 7:49 to start the game and fell behind early, 9-0. The Cougars made seven of 33 first-half shots (21.2 percent) and trailed 37-21 at the half, a lead Northwestern expanded to as many as 37 in the second half en route to the 31-point victory.
Elijah Weaver led Chicago State in scoring with 19 points while Jahsean Corbett added 14 and Wesley Cardet 11. Northwestern's Robbie Beran led all scorers with 20 points while Corbett led all players with eight rebounds.
Despite the slow start CSU battled back with an early 10-2 run and trailed just 11-10 following a Wesley Cardet three pointer. At that point the Wildcats went on a 14-3 run and a 25-13 lead leaving the Cougars to play catchup for the remainder of the game. The teams exchanged baskets for the remainder of the first half and Northwestern went into the locker room at halftime with a 37-21 lead.
Northwestern began the second half with a 13-4 run with five of those points coming from the charity stripe where the Wildcats would outscore CSU 27-13, shooting 32 foul shots to Chicago State's 18. The Cougars shot just 16-of-63 from the field (25.4 percent) which included 9-of-34 from beyond the three-point arc in the loss. Chicago State did hit the offensive boards, out rebounding Northwestern 14-13 and CSU also won the turnover battle with 12 against NU's 14.
The next action for the Cougars will be November 11 as they travel to St. Paul, Minnesota to face St. Thomas at the Anderson Athletic & Recreation Complex at 7 p.m. The same two teams opened the 2021-22 season at the JCC in Chicago in Cougars head coach Gerald Gillion's first game and it also marked the Tommies first game in Division I basketball. Chicago State earned a 77-72 win while St. Thomas would go on to a 10-20 overall record and 4-14 mark in the Summit.

Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
