Elijah Weaver Leads All Scorers with 19 in Loss at Cleveland State

Cougars Wrap Up Busy Week at Marquette Saturday

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team dropped a 77-63 decision at Cleveland State Wednesday afternoon in a pre-Thanksgiving matinee at CSU Home MTE in Cleveland, Ohio. The Cougars overcame an early 13-point deficit to go into the locker room at halftime tied, 34-34, but another early second-half run left Chicago State playing catch up for the remainder of the first half. 

Elijah Weaver was one of three Cougars in double figures and he led all scorers with 19 points. Jahsean Corbett added 16 to go with 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season and Wesley Cardet had 11.

A busy week for the  men's basketball team culminates on the road at Marquette on Saturday, November 26 at 7:30 p.m. at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. This will be the ninth meeting between the two schools with Marquette earning wins in each of the eight previous matchups. Marquette enters the week with a 3-1 record with games against Mississippi State (Monday) and either Georgia Tech or Utah on Wednesday.

1st Half - Cleveland State 34, Chicago State 34
The Cougars scored first on an Elijah Weaver layup and after a Jahsean Corbett three, the game was tied 5-5 with 17:15 remaining
The Vikings then went on a 13-0 run snd the Cougars endured a nearly seven-minute scoring drought
Weaver connected on a three at the 10:52 mark but Chicago State trailed 18-8 with 10:52 left in the first half
Cleveland State extended the lead to 14 following a made three with 9:42 to go and to 15 following a free throw at the 8:43 mark
Trailing by 12, the Cougars closed to within nine following a Deshawn Jean-Charles jump shot
The Vikings converted a pair of free throw to move the lead back to 11, 32-21, with 3:53 left in the half
Chicago State would close the half with a 13-2 run on the strength of Weaver's 14 first-half points
1st Half - Cleveland State 34 Chicago State 34

2nd Half - Marshall 43, Chicago State 29
The Vikings came out hot in the second half with an 8-0 run before Corbett connected on a jump shot at 17:04 to make the score 42-36
Cleveland State extended the lead to 13, 58-45, at 12:30
Weaver converted a three to cut the lead into single digits, 59-51, at the 9:51 mark
Chicago State would get the lead down to seven following a Bryce Johnson dunk, 64-57, with 5:08 left
The Vikings closed out the game with a 13-6 run for the 14-point win

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
