CHICAGO, IL - The Chicago State women's basketball battled it out against the Eastern Illinois Panthers and lost 64-87.
Ahlea Meyers and Janiah Newell finished with sixteen points each, along with Taylor Norris adding on thirteen, and Ana Haklicka twelve.
First Quarter - Eastern Illinois 23, Chicago State 8
- The Panthers opened up the scoring with a layup to cup 2-0
- This ended up being part of 9-0 run which had the Cougars trailing early in the first
- Chicago State finally ended the Panthers run with a beautiful layup by Norris to open up their scoring at 2-9
- The Cougars went on to score six more points with deuces by Haklicka and Josie Hill, however the Panthers maintained their comfortable lead at the end with a score of 23-8
Second Quarter - Eastern Illinois 51, Chicago State 17
- Eastern Illinois opened up the scoring by converting an And One play
- The Cougars followed with a ferocious driving layup from Hill to reach a 10-26 score
- The Panthers then went on an 6-0, increasing their lead to 32-10
- However, it was then cut by Haklicka with a beautiful jumper for the Cougars to make it 12-32
- Unfortunately, EIU then went on a 19-5 run which only maximized their lead at the half with a score of 51-17
Third Quarter - Eastern Illinois 74, Chicago State 39
- This time the Cougars opened up the scoring with a deuce from Norris
- However, the Panthers answered back with a trey, which was then followed by yet another deuce for the Cougars by Jacia Cunningham to reach a score of 54-21
- The Cougars then manages to go on a 7-4 rally with three points from Newell and a trey from Ahlea Meyers
- Nonetheless, the Panthers maintained their lead after the third quarter came to an end at 74-39
Fourth Quarter - Eastern Illinois
- The Cougars once again opened up the scoring with a fast break layup by Ahlea Meyers
- However, the panthers answered with a 4-0 run to increase their lead to 78-41
- Fortunately, the Cougars then went on a 20-6 run featuring treys and deuces from Haklicka, Newell, and Meyers which cut deeply into the Panthers lead and reached a score of 64-87
- However, the impressive run fell short as Eastern Illinois took the win at the final horn
The CSU women's basketball team wrap up a busy week with a Power Five opponent in Colorado coming to the JCC on Sunday, November 27th with a noon tip. It will be Faith Day at the Jones Convocation Center and all religions are welcome to attend. This will be the first ever meeting between the two teams and Colorado enters the week with a 4-1 record with a game at Tennessee Friday.
