Five Cougars Score in Double Figures in 82-70 Loss at Marshall

CSU plays Cleveland State Wednesday at Noon

The Chicago State men's basketball team dropped an 82-70 decision to Marshall University Monday night at the Cam Henderson Center in Huntington, West Virginia in the first meeting between the two schools. With the loss, CSU drops to 2-4 overall while Marshall improves to 4-1.
 
The Cougars rebounded from a hot start by Marshall who jumped out to a 9-0 lead and eventually led by 11.  CSU had an 11-0 run of their own and the game was tied 39-39 at the half. Bryce Johnson led five Cougars in double figures with 18 points. Wesley Cardet added 17, Jahsean Corbett and Kedrick Green each had 11 and Arol Kacuol had 10.
 
Next up, the Cougars will play a pre-Thanksgiving matinee at Cleveland State University on Wednesday, November 23 at 12 p.m. at CSU Home MTE in Cleveland, Ohio. Wednesday's game will be the third all-time meeting between the two schools with each team claiming one previous victory, playing back-to-back seasons in 2006-07 (Chicago State win, 82-77 OT at Cleveland State) and 2007-08 (Cleveland State win, 77-73 at Chicago State) with each team winning on the other team's home court. The Vikings are 2-3 overall and are 1-1 at home this season.

Kedrick Green stopped the run with a jumper and get CSU on the board
Marshall's hot shooting continued extending the lead to 11 on two occasions (13-2, 15-4) before the Cougars managed an extended run
Arol Kacuol ignited an 11-0 Chicago State run culminated by a dunk to turn the 11-point deficit into a 15-15 tie. Kacuol scored six of the 11 and Green had a layup and Bryce Johnson a three
Chicago State claimed their first lead of the game, 19-17, following a Green jumper with 10 minutes remaining until half
Marshall extended to five-point leads on two occasions but the Cougars ended the half with a 5-0 run on a three by Green and a layup by Kacuol and the teams went into the locker room at halftime knotted 39-39

2nd Half - Marshall 43, Chicago State 31
Following a Jahsean Corbett layup, the Thundering Herd went on a 9-0 run to lead 48-41 with 17:30 remaining to play
Corbett made a layup and, following a Marshall score, Johnson hit a three and the lead was down to four, 50-46
Following a Corbett free throw, Marshall rattled off a 7-0 run to go up 10, 57-47 with 14:09 remaining
Marshall matched their largest lead of the game, 11 points, following a pair of free throws to go up 59-48
The Cougars pieced together a 15-8 run to pull within four, 67-63, with 7:50 left to play
Following a Wesley Cardet layup to again pull CSU to within four, 69-65, Marshall responded with a 9-0 run to go 13, 76-56 with 2:34 left to play

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
