Cougars Men’s Basketball Claims Home-Opening Win over IUPUI 68-58

Convert 7-of-11 Threes in the Second Half to Pull Away for the Win

Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team earned a home-opening 68-58 win over IUPUI Monday night at the JCC in Chicago. The Cougars trailed by two at the half after converting just 1-of-11 three pointers but turned the shooting woes around in the second, making 7-of-11 from beyond the arc for the 10-point win.

Wesley Cardet and Elijah Weaver each scored five points in the first half as Weaver converted the lone three. Kedrick Green sparked the Cougars in the second half and scored all 12 of his points in the last 20 minutes shooting 4-of-6 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three. Weaver led the Cougars with 15 points and Jahsean Corbett and Green had 12 each.

IUPUI converts a bucket and free throw to go up two, 34-32
Leading by one, 37-36, CSU goes on a 14-3 run on threes, two by Weaver and one each by Corbett and Green to lead 48-39 with 9:22 left
The Jaguars respond with a 6-1 run to cut the lead to four, 49-45
Bryce Johnson and Deshawn Jean-Charles convert threes to put CSU back up eight, 55-47
IUPUI got within four on two occasions but a late 7-0 run, a Weaver free throw and layups by Green and Cardet put CSU up 62-53 with 3:09 remaining

The next action for the Cougars will be back in the JCC against Valparaiso on Wednesday, November 16 at 7 p.m. Valpo enters the contest with a 1-1 record, opening the season with an 85-70 loss at Toledo then came home and beat Western Michigan 81-65 last Sunday. This will be the 37th meeting between the two schools with the Beacons holding a 33-3 advantage. The first meeting between the Cougars and Beacons was during the 1994-95 season (L, 104-68) and the last was played at Valparaiso during the 2016-17 season (L, 80-61). The last time Chicago State beat Valparaiso was the last time the two teams played in Chicago, a 90-76 CSU victory on January 19, 2006.

About Chicago State
Chicago State University Athletics is comprised of 15 intercollegiate teams involving over 150 student-athletes that compete in basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and volleyball. CSU held memberships in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and NCAA Division II before transitioning to NCAA Division I in 1994. Melvin Bland was the first CSU student-athlete to gain NAIA All-American status in 1974 as a wrestler. Fred Evans became the first black swimmer ever to win a national championship in 1975. In 1991, the Chicago State women's tennis team became the first all-black college team to amass an unbeaten season at the NCAA level. CSU's women's basketball team earned a spot in the 2011 Women's Basketball Invitational and CSU's men's basketball team won the 2013 Great West Conference Tournament title, also making an appearance in the CollegeInside.com Postseason Tournament (CIT). The Men's Outdoor Track & Field 4x100-Meter Relay team were 2019 Honorable Mention All-Americans and WAC Champions. Their feat marked the first time the Chicago State's men's track & field program was represented at the national meet. Chicago State volleyball recorded a historic season in 2021, with Yanlis Feliz becoming CSU's first volleyball All-American and head coach Tony Trifonov earning selection as WAC Coach of the Year. During that same season, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
