Volleyball Falls to Ole Miss

Feliz tallies 23 kills

Bloomington, Ind. — For their first match of the week in Bloomington, the Chicago State Women's volleyball team (6-4) battled it out against the University of Mississippi Rebels and fell, 3-1.

For the first set out of a potential five, both teams started off with points back-to-back with a kill from the Rebels' Anna Bair and a ball handling error by Samantha Schnitta.

The rest of the set saw the Rebels gaining several leads, at one point clawing ahead, 10-6, with the Cougars always trying to claw their way back but coming up short.

This brought us to a tie at 21-21 with the Cougars finally cementing a comeback and tying the game, yet ultimately falling short as the Rebels answered back with a four-score streak featuring three kills and attack error by the Cougars, finishing off the set with a win at 25-21.

To commence the second set, both scores once again came off of a kill followed by an attack error which tied both teams at 1-1.

The set echoed the same style throughout its early stages, which brought it to a 14-14 tie.

The Rebels emulated their performance in the first set and established their dominance with a six score-streak with the Cougars only scoring one in between, bringing the score to 21-15 lead for the Rebels.

The Cougars once again pursued a comeback but fell short and the Rebels once again took the set win with an identical score as the same set of 25-21.

The Cougars then headed into the third set trailing overall in sets, 2-0. Both teams started off once again tied with a kill followed by an error at 1-1. 

The majority of the set consisted of the Cougars finally asserting their dominance and leading all throughout, at one point leading by five points at 21-16.

The Rebels came very close to completing a comeback of their own but the Cougars capped off the win at 25-23 with a kill by none other than Yanlis Feliz, who finished with 23 kills.

The Cougars suddenly had a chance to stay in this match with an overall score of sets at 2-1.

The fourth set began with an attack error followed by a stellar kill by Nailah Jones, tying the score at 1-1, the fourth consecutive 1-1 start in this match.

Followed by this tie was another tie at 2-2, that continued with the Rebels committing an absolute onslaught of 12 points with the Cougars only scoring five points in between, which brought the score to 14-7

The Rebels never looked back and closed out the victory with a 3-0 scoring run at 25-15 in a crushing defeat for the Cougars at an overall set of 3-1.

The Cougars next face tournament host Indiana tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., followed by Alabama A&M at 4:00 p.m.
