Matthew Breitbarth Named Assistant Women’s Volleyball Coach

Accomplished Men’s Player Transitioning to the Coaching Ranks

CHICAGO – Chicago State head women's volleyball coach Tony Trifonov announced today that Matthew Breitbarth has been named an assistant coach. Breitbarth was an assistant coach at the University of Northern Iowa since January 2021 following an All-American career as a player for the University of Illinois' men's volleyball team.

"I am extremely excited to welcome Matthew to the Cougar volleyball family," Trifonov said. "His involvement with the University of Illinois and the University of Northern Iowa volleyball programs, as well as his experience as a collegiate player, will complement an already very talented coaching staff here at CSU. We are looking forward to Matthew helping our student-athletes to learn, grow and improve as we strive to compete for championships."

Breitbarth was a four-year member of the University of Illinois men's club volleyball team (2017-21) which finished fifth at nationals in 2017, second in 2019 and won the USAV Collegiate National Championship in 2021. He is a two-time first team All-American (2019 and 2021), Collegiate Division MVP (2021) and was named the Big 10 Setter of the Year (2019).

While participating on the Illinois men's volleyball team, Breitbarth also assisted the women's volleyball team as a male practice player (2017-20). During that time, the women's volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2017 and to the Final Four in 2018.

Breitbarth graduated from the University of Illinois in 2020 with a bachelor's degree in advertising and communication and is currently working on a master's degree in recreation, sport and tourism with a sport concentration at Illinois.
