Homewood, IL — The Chicago State men's tennis team ended the regular season with a 4-2 win over St. Louis Sunday afternoon in Homewood. The Cougars have won three of their last five matches heading into the WAC tournament where they will take on Grand Canyon May 1 at 2 p.m.
Chicago State earned the doubles point with
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza winning 6-3 win at No. 1 and
Javier Sanchez Pradillo and
Pedro Alvarez winning 6-2 at No. 3 to earn the team point.
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval were on the court and trailing 4-2 when the team point was awarded.
"Today's match was the definition of excitement," head coach
Jack Barton said. "This was a match that you had to see. Such great play by both teams and, at the end, we were able to pull out the victory. This is what we needed going into the conference tournament. I can't tell you how proud I am of the guys."
In singles, the Cougars won three of the five contested matches to earn the team win.
Jakov Suler was the first off the court with a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 1.
Javier Sanchez Pradillo lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 2 to cut the Cougars team lead to 2-1. At that point, freshman
Pedro Alvarez earned his 14
th consecutive victory at No. 4, 6-2, 6-2. The Billikens then won at No. 2 when
Jesus Perez Plaza lost 6-2, 6-4 to cut the lead to 3-2 with two matches still playing.
Jakub Zamorski sealed the win for the Cougars with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 victory at No. 5 and, at No. 6,
Max Sandoval was trailing in a tightly-contested match, 6-4, 5-7, 4-5 when Chicago State earned the win.
The next action for the Cougars will be at the Western Athletic Conference Tournament in Las Cruces, New Mexico, May 1-2. The Cougars are the No. 4 seed and will take on No. 1 Grand Canyon May 1 at 2 p.m.
