Las Cruces, NM — The Chicago State women's tennis team dropped a 7-0 decision to host New Mexico State Friday morning in Las Cruces. The Cougars continue to play shorthanded and defaulted two matches which was too much to overcome against the Aggies.
New Mexico earned the doubles team point by sweeping a pair of matches and CSU defaulted at No. 3.
Kristina Pukhaeva and
Katarina Drazic dropped a tightly-contested contest at No. 1, 7-6 (7-5) and
Katarina Dukic and
Susana Andres lost 6-3 at No. 2.
"We weren't able to pull it out today," associate head coach
Wyatt Pauley said. "We fought really hard in doubles and had a chance to pull it out, but we just came up short. New Mexico State played well in the big moments and we just weren't able to adjust in time for singles. We need to refocus and be ready for a tough match tomorrow against Grand Canyon."
In singles, Chicago State defaulted at No. 6 and Pukhaeva lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 and
Sofiya Sedovich lost 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 to clinch the win for the Aggies. At that point, Andres lost 6-0, 6-2 at No. 5, Dukic dropped a 6-4, 6-3 decision at No. 4 and Drazic lost 7-6 (7-3), 6-2 at No. 3 to complete the sweep for New Mexico State.
The team will be back on the court tomorrow at 2 p.m. against Grand Canyon University to wrap up regular season Western Athletic Conference play. The Cougars will then have a pair of non-conference matches against St. Louis and Cardinal Stritch before going to the WAC Tournament, scheduled for April 30-May 2 in Las Cruces, New Mexico.
