Phoenix — The Chicago State men's tennis team dropped their Western Athletic Conference season opener by a count of 6-1 to the Grand Canyon University Antelopes Friday morning in Phoenix at the GCU Tennis Facility. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez was once again a bright spot for the Cougars. He earned his sixth consecutive victory with a tightly-contested 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 victory.
The Antelopes won the team point in doubles, sweeping three matches, two of which went to tiebreaker.
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza dropped a 7-6 (9-7) decision at No. 1 and
Javier Sanchez and
Pedro Alverez lost 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2.
Jakub Zamorski and
Max Sandoval lost 6-3 at No. 3.
"We played really well in doubles," head coach
Jack Barton said. "Every match was close and competitive so we felt good going into singles. We have to move forward to tomorrow with a positive attitude and expect to play our best."
In singles, the Cougars dropped five of six matches with
Alvarez earning the lone victory at No. 5.
Jakov Suler lost 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 1,
Javier Sanchez lost 6-3, 6-3 and No. 2 and
Jesus Perez Plaza dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision at No. 3.
Jakub Zamorski lost 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4 and
Max Sandoval dropped a 6-0, 6-4 decision at No. 6.
The Cougars will continue their first WAC pod tomorrow against Seattle at 10 a.m. at the GCU Tennis Facility in Phoenix.
