SEATTLE — Playing its second match in Seattle this week, the Chicago State women's soccer team (0-11, 0-9 WAC) succumbed to Seattle (8-3-1, 7-1-1 WAC), 6-1.
"I'm very proud of the team," head coach Cristiano Costa said. "It was good seeing their intensity, and how they looked to play with each other. We are grinding and will continue working to get better for next week's matches."
After seven scoreless minutes, Seattle's Sydney Carr tallied a goal to lift the Redhawks ahead, 1-0. Carr opened the scoring after notching four goals Thursday night.
In the 16th minute, Chicago State's Debora Maciel committed a foul that gave Emily Bunnell a penalty kick opportunity. Bunnell struck home a successful strike to make the score 2-0, Redhawks.
Carr tacked on another goal five minutes later and Seattle's Michele Adam scored on a penalty kick at the 40-minute mark to power Seattle ahead, 4-0, at halftime.
In the second half, Seattle racked up two more scores, from Kate Connelly and Sydney Carr. Then, the Cougars broke through into the offensive zone, earning a major opportunity.
Sophomore Barbara Castellanos, who led Chicago State with three goals in 2019, scored her first goal of the season. Sara Quevedo launched a shot that re-directed to Castellanos off of goalkeeper Madison Waguespack, and the West Chicago native rolled the ball into the goal.
A scoreless final stretch secured a 6-1 Seattle victory.
The Cougars now return to Chicago to take on Grand Canyon University at 1 p.m. on Thursday, then at 12 p.m. on Saturday. The matches will be carried live on the WAC Digital Network.
