Plainfield, Ill. — The Chicago State men's tennis team earned a 4-3 decision over Lewis University at the Five Star Tennis Center in Plainfield, Illinois, Thursday morning.
Max Sandoval clinched the win for the Cougars at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory to give the Cougars a 4-2 lead with one match still on the court.
The Cougars captured the doubles point with
Pedro Alvarez and
Javier Sanchez Pradillo winning 7-6 (7-5) at No. 2 and
Jesus Perez and
Max Sandoval won 6-1 at No. 3.
Pedja Kolaric and
Jakob Zamorski lost 6-3 at No. 1.
"The guys really stepped up as a team today," head coach
Jack Barton said. "We had less than a 12-hour turnaround from yesterday's match, and the guys pulled together and brought a lot of energy today. We have a day to rest and then we will get focused on our next match Saturday."
In addition to Sandoval's match-clinching win, the Cougars picked up victories at No. 2 (
Jesus Perez, 6-4, 6-4) and No. 5 (
Pedro Alvarez, 6-0, 6-0) but dropped close matches at No. 1 (
Javier Sanchez, 6-2, 7-5), No. 3 (
Jakub Zamorski, 6-4, 7-6 (6-3)) and No. 4 (
Pedja Kolaric, 6-2, 6-2).
The Cougars next match is Saturday, March 13, at IUPUI in Indianapolis at 4:30 p.m.
