Acedo Scores, but New Mexico State Takes Down Cougars

Carmen Acedo scores her first goal of 2021

EL PASO, Texas — Junior Carmen Acedo drilled in her first goal of the season, but the Chicago State women's soccer team (0-4, 0-2 WAC) fell, 6-1, to New Mexico State (2-3, 2-0 WAC) on Monday afternoon.

Two minutes in, New Mexico State's Grace Olson tallied a goal to lift the Aggies to the lead.

Chicago State would then generate a few opportunities, including a chance by Oliveira at the 27th minute, but the score remained 1-0.

At the 39th minute, however, a Chicago State offensive zone attack powered by Oliveira gave Acedo a close-range opportunity. Acedo struck with her left foot, sending the ball to the back of the net and evening the match, 1-1.

The goal served as Acedo's first, and Chicago State's second, of 2021. The match was tied, 1-1, at the halftime break in El Paso.

The Aggies then ended the stalemate at the 55th minute. Hannah Leitner found a free ball off the post and sunk in a goal to lift the score to 2-1. A minute later, Xitlaly Hernandez lofted in a deep goal to put the Aggies up by two.

Loma McNeese launched a shot to the right side of the net at the 60th minute to extend the lead to 4-1 before Hernandez capped off a hat trick with two 66th minute goals to blow the Aggies ahead, 6-1.

That score held for the final 24 minutes, as New Mexico State earned its second conference win.

Joining Acedo and Oliveira, Saige Thor and Barbara Castellanos each tallied shot opportunities for the Cougars.

"It was a very good first half," head coach Cristiano Costa said. "Unfortunately, during the second half, our energy level dropped. It cost us the game."
