Box Score Park Forest, Ill. — The University of North Dakota won two of three doubles matches and swept the singles competition for a 7-0 win over the Chicago State men's tennis team Sunday afternoon in Park Forest, Illinois. Despite the outcome, several matches were tightly contested and
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez picked up their first doubles win of the season. It was the second win in as many days for the Fighting Hawks over the Cougars who won 6-1 Saturday.
UND won the doubles point, winning two of three matches. Suler and Perez earned a 6-2 win at No. 1 but
Pedro Alvarez and
Max Sandoval (No. 2) and
Jakub Zamorski and
Javier Sanchez (No. 3) each dropped matches by a count of 7-5.
"It was another close doubles match," head coach
Jack Barton said. "We played well but we have to tighten up and play well during the pressure points."
CSU's Jesus Perez dropped a 6-2, 7-6 decision at No. 1 singles. At No. 2,
Jakov Suler lost 6-3, 6-3 and Javier Sanchez lost 7-5, 7-6 (3) at No. 3.
Jakub Zamorski also dropped a close match, dropping a 7-5, 7-6 (7) match at No. 4 and
Pedro Alvarez, who came into the match with two consecutive singles wins, lost 6-2, 6-2, at No. 5.
Max Sandoval, who was slotted at No. 6, had to default his match due to injury.
"We had a better day in singles," Barton said. "We did different things to keep the match going and stayed in the points longer, but we have to play the big points better. Moral victories are good to build confidence, but we have to figure out how to get a win on the board. We need step up. We'll get back to practice and start working."
The Cougars will travel to Muncie, Indiana, Wednesday, Feb. 24, to take on the Ball State University Cardinals at 2 pm.
