Box Score Homewood, Ill. — The Chicago State men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to visiting North Dakota Saturday in Homewood, Illinois. Freshman
Pedro Alvarez won his second consecutive match for the Cougars and teamed with fellow freshman
Max Sandoval for a win in doubles.
North Dakota won the doubles point with a 2-1 advantage. Alvarez and Sandoval earned a 6-1 decision at No. 2 for the Cougars while
Jakov Suler and
Jesus Perez Plaza dropped a 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles and
Jakub Zamorski and
Javier Sanchez lost 6-4 at No. 3.
"I thought we played much better in doubles than we did the last two matches, so we were very encouraged going into singles," head coach
Jack Barton said. "When we got to singles, it just didn't go our way. We didn't stay mentally strong when things we normally do well, weren't working. We didn't adjust. So we will need to have a different mental focus and be tougher tomorrow."
Pedro Alvarez, who earned his first collegiate win against Creighton in the Cougars last match, won his second in row with a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles.
Jakov Suler dropped a 6-3, 6-3 decision at No. 1. No. 2
Jesus Perez Plaza dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision and
Jakub Zamorski fell at No. 3, 7-5, 6-5. No. 4 Javier Sanchez lost 6-3, 6-1 and, at No. 5,
Max Sandoval lost 6-2, 6-2.
"Pedro (Alverez) has been doing great," Barton said. "He played very well. He was down in the first set, 1-4, made the adjustments and won the next 11 games. It was a great performance by him today."
The same two teams will match up tomorrow, Sunday, Feb. 21, at 10 am in Park Forest.
