Box Score The Chicago State men's basketball team wrapped up non-conference competition with an 87-50 loss at Drake Wednesday night. The two teams were originally scheduled to play Dec. 19 but rescheduled due to health and safety protocols.
Drake led by 18 at the half and went on a 9-0 run to start the second leaving the Cougars to play from behind. The Bulldogs converted 50 percent of their shots, including 15-of-32 three-point attempts while the Cougars, who converted five threes in the first half, missed their first seven in the second as Butler continued to build on their lead.
Coreyoun Rushin led Chicago State with 13 points while
Jahsean Corbett and
Dominique Alexander each had nine. Corbett led the way on the boards with nine rebounds while
Brandon Betson, Rushin and Corbett each had two assists.
Corbett opened the scoring in the game, draining a three for an early 3-0 Cougars advantage. Drake tied it at the free throw line with three freebies, then converted a three of their own for a 6-3 advantage. Alexander then tied it back up, 6-6, with a three before the Bulldogs went on an 8-1 run to jump out to a 14-7 lead with 12:43 remaining in the first half.
Drake hit five of their first 10 three-point attempts while Chicago State was just 2-of-9 from that distance and the Bulldogs extended its lead to 26-10. At that point, Drake went on a 9-3 run to extend the lead to 22 points, 35-13, with 2:51 left in the half.
Drake collected half their points from the free throw line in the final three minutes and the Cougars closed the half with a modest 12-8 run and the Bulldogs went into the locker room at halftime with an 18-point lead, 43-25.
The Bulldogs opened the second half with a 9-0 run before Rushin stopped CSU's drought with a dunk but Butler's lead was 25, 52-27. Drake stayed hot from three-point land and continued to build on their lead and had double up CSU, 82-40, with 5:30 remaining in the game.
The Cougars will return to action for the start of Western Athletic Conference competition on Dec. 30 at Grand Canyon then will ring in 2022 at New Mexico State on January 1.

In 2021, three different CSU teams earned victories over Big Ten opponents with men's soccer beating Northwestern, women's basketball upending Wisconsin and volleyball, which established a school record 17 wins and hosted a post-season volleyball tournament for the first time in program history, swept Indiana in Bloomington.
