CHICAGO — Chicago State redshirt sophomore Yanlis Feliz has been named the Western Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week after commanding performances in wins over California Baptist and Seattle U.
An outside hitter from Pedernales, Dominican Republic, Feliz racked up a career-best 39 kills on 93 attacks, hitting .301%, in a five-set victory over then-first place California Baptist Thursday night. She then posted 17 kills in a Saturday sweep of Seattle.
Feliz has registered double-digit kills for 33rd consecutive matches, continuing her reign as the WAC's most prolific player. No one in the conference has more than 370 kills other than Feliz, who has hammered home 456. Her 5.18 kills per set ranks third in NCAA Division I.
The Seattle victory was the Cougars' sixth win in their last seven matches, continuing the best season in Division I program history, with a record 16 wins. Prior to this season, no CSU volleyball team in the Division I era had won more than 12 matches.
The Cougars have already clinched a berth in their second consecutive WAC Tournament and are a half-game out of first place in the WAC West Division.
The Cougars next face Grand Canyon on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Phoenix before rounding out the regular season on Saturday, November 13 against New Mexico State. CSU will then plunge into its second consecutive WAC Tournament.
