ST. GEORGE, Utah — The Chicago State women's volleyball team (14-7, 6-3 WAC) continued its historic season with a 3-0 sweep win over the Dixie State University Trailblazers.
With 14 wins, the Cougars have continued their scorching start, earning the program's most wins in the Division I era (which began in 1988).
Yanlis Feliz led the Cougars with 20 kills, her 30th consecutive match with 10 or more.
In the first set, an attack error by the Cougars gave the Trailblazers an early 1-0 lead, but the Cougars bounced back with a ferocious kill by none other than Feliz to tie it all up at 1-1.
The Cougars would ride on this early momentum and cruise their way to a highly dominant set win which was capped off by two continuous attacking errors by the trailblazers as the Cougars comfortably led 1-0 in sets overall with a set score of 25-16.
In the second set, the Trailblazers again came away with the first score after a stellar service ace by Lauren Mena, but the Cougars bounced back with a kill by Jaclyn Inclan.
The Cougars stayed on the attack but failed to gain any separation from Dixie State. This led to a 6-5 score with the Cougars only up one, when suddenly Ece Erol erupted with three stellar consecutive service aces, which helped the Cougars make a final push and closed out the set with another dominant kill from Nailah Jones and an identical dominant score as the first at 25-16.
A series sweep was then up for grabs heading into the third set, which the Cougars took the first point in and rode to dominate Dixie State with a final score of 25-18, sealing the series sweep off of an attack error by the Trailblazers at 3-0.
After Feliz's 20 kills, Jones registered 17 for the Cougars. Mesalina Severino also blocked two shots and posted a .667 hitting percentage.
The Cougars next face Utah Valley University on Saturday at 1 p.m.
