BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. — The Chicago State men's soccer team (2-11-2, 0-7-1 WAC) suffered a 5-1 loss against the California Baptist University Lancers Sunday at SeatGeek Stadium.
"This was a match of chances, as we had a few opportunities throughout the match that we didn't take care of," head coach Trevor Banks said. "The opposite goes for them. The score doesn't reflect the actual match. I'm proud of my guys fighting throughout the whole match. We have two really tough road matches coming up as we end the first campaign, which we are looking forward to."
In the first half, the Lancers came out firing on all cylinders and, just nine minutes into the match, opened up the scoring with a swift finish by Emiel Deconinck, who was assisted by Tete Vacas.
The Cougars relentlessly fought back, but nonetheless, the Lancers struck once more just 10 minutes after their first at the 19th minute with a finish by Tete Vacas, who now has a goal and an assist, which gave the Lancers a very early 2-0 lead.
Both teams produced several goal scoring chances throughout the remainder of the half, yet neither broke through, which had the Lancers comfortably leading 2-0 heading into halftime.
In the second half, the Lancers continued the attack, as they scored another three times. At the 60th minute, Bryan Iliohan struck in a goal, at the 63rd minute, it was Vacas again, his second of the match, and lastly, at the 76th minute, Marcos Vasallo finished off a goal.
The Cougars were able to eventually break through the Lancers' back line, scoring their only goal of the match at the 83rd minute courtesy of captain Gaye Diadie.
The match ended 5-1 as California Baptist cruised to the win.
The Cougars next face San Jose State University on Friday, October 29 at 9 p.m.
