Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Seattle Rallies to Dismount Cougars, 70-57

Haklicka leads Cougars with 13 points

CHICAGO — The Chicago State women's basketball team (0-6, 0-3 WAC) held a nine-point halftime advantage but the Seattle University Redhawks (7-7, 3-2) used a strong second half to pull away for a 13-point win.

It was a back-and-forth affair at the outset as Ra'Shamani Webb (Bloomington, Ill. /Normal West HS) opened the scoring with a quick jumper 13 seconds into the game. The teams exchanged baskets and, with Seattle U ahead 7-6, an Ana Haklicka (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Touristic and Catering School ) layup started a 12-0 Cougars run capped by a Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) layup and an 18-7 CSU lead. Chicago State held an 18-12 advantage after one quarter of play.

The Cougars extended the lead to 10, 27-17, on a Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) layup with 5:14 to go in the first half but both teams suffered long scoring droughts with Seattle U failing to score for over five minutes. The Cougars took a nine-point advantage into the locker room at halftime, 30-21.

The Redhawks then came out of the locker room after halftime and reeled off 12 consecutive points to turn a nine-point deficit into a three-point lead, 33-30, with 5:21 remaining in the third. Seattle U extended the lead to seven before Thorman-McKey converted a layup and cut the lead to 41-36. Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) drilled a jumper and Haklicka sunk a three to knot the game at 41-41 with 1:41 remaining in the third quarter. The Redhawks closed out the quarter with a 9-3 run and a 50-44 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Seattle U's romp continued into the fourth quarter, scoring 10 of the quarter's first 12 points. The Redhawks led, 60-46, with 6:12 to go in the game. The Cougars managed to cut the lead to 10 on a Haklicka layup with 3:08 to go but CSU couldn't close the gap for the 70-57 final.

The Cougars had two players in double figures, Ana Haklicka (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Touristic and Catering School ) with 13 and Ifunanya Okoye (Lagos, Nigeria /Banner Christian School) with 12. Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) and Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) each scored nine while Okoye just missed a double-double and was the team's leading rebounder, with nine.

The same two teams will be back in action against one another tomorrow at 2 p.m. In an effort to minimize both travel and exposure, this season's Western Athletic Conference's schedule format features back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site.
