Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

California Baptist Tops Cougars in Saturday Showdown

Thorman-McKey dominates with 22 points

Riverside, Calif. — The Chicago State women's basketball team (0-5, 0-2 WAC) dropped its second consecutive game to the California Baptist Lancers (14-0, 6-0) in Riverside, California, this time by a count of 67-52. The same two teams played Friday, as the WAC's schedule format features back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site in an effort to minimize both travel and exposure. The Lancers won Friday's game, 93-52.

CBU jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game with contributions by four different Lancers during the hot start. Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) then snapped the run with a pair of free throws and Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) did the same to cut the deficit to 11-4. The Cougars converted one field goal in the first quarter, a Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) lay-in, and Precious Adediran (UK, London/Barking Abbey Sixth Form) tacked on a free throw to round out the first-quarter scoring with CBU leading, 18-7.

In the second, California Baptist again started fast and furious, this time posting a 10-2 run to extend the lead to 28-9. Thorman-McKey converted three-of-six field goals during the second stanza, including a trey at the buzzer to cut the gap to 43-20. The Cougars shot just 16% (5-of-31) from the field in the first half, including 1-of-6 from beyond the three-point arc.

In the third quarter, Laura Segues (Castelloli, Spain) didn't miss, scoring 10 points on 3-of-3 shooting, two threes, helping the Cougars cut the deficit to 16, 54-38, at the end of three quarters.

The Cougars proceeded to cut the gap to as close as 12 points during the final frame, but a Lancers three extended the lead and the teams traded buckets down the stretch.

Thorman-McKey, as she did Friday, led all scorers with 22 points. She converted 7-of-21 shots while knocking down 7-of-11 free throws. Segues added 13 points, all coming in the second half, while Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) was the Cougars leading rebounder with six.

Chicago State will return to the Jones Convocation Center for the first time since the season opener, Nov. 28, in a WAC matchup against Seattle University. The Cougars and Redhawks are scheduled to face off Friday, January 29 and Saturday, January 30 with both games set for a 3 p.m. tip.
