Thorman-McKey dazzles with 20 points

Riverside, Calif. — The Chicago State women's basketball team (0-4, 0-1 WAC) returned to the court for the first time in over a month and dropped a 93-52 decision to the California Baptist Lancers (13-0, 5-0) in Riverside, California. The game was the Western Athletic Conference opener for the Cougars, who had its first four conference games canceled due to COVID-19 protocols.

After missing their first attempt from the floor, the Cougars converted their next four shots to jump out to a 10-6 lead on buckets from Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ), Nadia Thorman-McKey (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township) and Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ). But the Lancers countered with a 10-0 run to take their first lead, 18-16, with 3:09 remaining in the first quarter. California Baptist then extended that lead to nine points after the first quarter, 27-18.

Thorman-McKey opened the second stanza with a bucket before California Baptist reeled off the next 14 points in the first six minutes of the quarter to extend the lead to 41-20. Thorman-McKey finished the quarter with eight points and the Cougars outscored the Lancers by three to close out the quarter. However, they trailed, 49-31, at the half. CBU dominated the third quarter, 27-12, extending the lead to 33 points and continued pulling away for the 41-point win.

Thorman-McKey led all scorers with 20 points. She converted 6-of-16 field goals while knocking down 8-of-10 free throws. She was also the team's leading rebounder with nine. Wynter Webb (Atlanta, GA/Mill Creek ) added six points while four players, Ra'Shamani Webb (Bloomington, Ill. /Normal West HS), Christina Britter (Dunlap, IL/Dunlap ), Laura Segues (Castelloli, Spain) and Ana Haklicka (Dubrovnik, Croatia/Touristic and Catering School ), each added five.

The same two teams will be back in action against one another tomorrow at 4 p.m. In an effort to minimize both travel and exposure, this season's Western Athletic Conference's schedule format features back-to-back games against the same opponent at the same site.
