CHICAGO – The Chicago State women's basketball team dropped a 68-57 contest to Grand Canyon on Saturday afternoon. For the second consecutive game,
Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) led the Cougars with 16 points.
Ines Maita Boix posted a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) was also in double figures with 15 points.
The contest was fairly close throughout despite the Lopes striking first taking a 7-3 lead early but the Cougars battled back and used back-to-back triples from Bowers and Maita Boix to take a 9-8 lead midway through the quarter.
Grand Canyon tied the game at 17 early in the first quarter and score see-sawed back and forth until the 4:47 mark. The visitors used a 8-2 run sparked by triples Venla Varis to pull ahead by nine points before a bucket from
Aja Phoumiphat (Las Vega, Nev./Centennial) stopped the run before the end of the half.
The third quarter was more of the back-and forth as neither team shot it very well but the visiting Lopes pulled away in the fourth quarter. A turnover on the first possession of the quarter by Chicago State set the tone and the Lopes capitalized going on a 12-6 run to take their largest lead of the game - 14 points - at the 4:44 mark.
The Cougars tried to cut back into the lead but wouldn't get any closer than nine points the rest of the way.
