Women’s Basketball Falls to Kansas City on the Road

KANSAS CITY –The Chicago State women's basketball team played a hard fought road contest at Kansas City but fell, 73-57, at the Swinney Center on Saturday afternoon.  The Cougars were led by Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) who had a team-best 17 points - her second highest scoring output of the season, just behind a 20-point outing against Oakland.

Also in double figures was Ines Mata Boix with 15 points and Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) with 14 points. Mata Box tallied her fourth double-double of the year with 15 points and a team best 12 rebounds while Alexandria Cliff (Manitowoc, Wis./Roncalli) also added 12 boards.

After cutting the lead to single digits in the third quarter, the Kangaroos pulled away in the beginning of the fourth quarter and held the Cougars scoreless for six minutes, taking a 62-42 lead at the 8:11 mark. Despite, trying to cut into the lead, the Cougars couldn't get anything going late and fell, 73-57.

In a game the Cougars trailed the entire way, they made a 9-2 run at the lead in the third quarter cutting a 17 Kansas City lead down to single digits twice in the final five minutes of the quarter, but they couldn't get over the hump as the Kangaroos used a 7-0 run to close the quarter and took a 58-42 lead at the end of the third quarter.

In the first quarter, the teams played close and the Cougars were able to capitalize on several Kansas City miscues to the tune of nine points, which helped them keep the contest close. The second quarter, Kansas City pulled away, outscoring Chicago State, 20-10,  and holding them to under 20 percent shooting as Kanas City took a 40-28 lead at the break.

The Cougars will stay on the road for the next two games and will start with a matchup with New Mexico State on Thursday night.
