LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Chicago State women's basketball team dropped an 80-56 road contest to New Mexico State on Thursday evening. For the second consecutive game,
Bethany Carstens (Kenai, Alaska/Nikiski) led the way for the Cougars with a career-best 23 points.
Carstens has now scored in double figures in six of the Cougars last six contests. The Alaska native also added seven rebounds – two rebounds shy of a new career-best – in the contest.
The contest was close from the outset with the teams maintaining a single-possession game for the majority of the first quarter. With the Cougars leading, 9-8 at the 6:15 mark, the Aggies used a 10-0 run to take a 18-9 lead with 3:14 left in the quarter. A pair of buckets from Carstens and
Tyeshia Bowers (Flint, Mich./Southwestern) cut the lead to five but the Aggies took an eight-point lead into the second stanza.
The Cougars couldn't get any offense going in the second quarter shooting just 27.3 percent from the field.
Aja Phoumiphat (Las Vega, Nev./Centennial) was a bright spot scoring five points in the quarter, as the Cougars trailed 45-27 at the break.
The teams played fairly even in the second half but the Cougars couldn't get any closer the remainder of the contest.
