Quevedo Posts Big Scoring Effort in Soccer’s 5-3 Home Defeat to WIU

CHICAGO – Junior Sara Quevedo (Lomo Blanco, Spain) posted a big scoring effort today for the Chicago State women's soccer team during its in-state home battle against Western Illinois, but the visiting Leathernecks would prevail by a score of 5-3 at Brooks Field.

Quevedo tallied her best effort so far as a Cougar by recording two goals and assisted on another goal in the second half while leading the all players with eight shot attempts and four scoring attempts as the Green and White snapped a near 300-minute scoreless streak in the contest.

WIU's Emily Bollman scored the only goal of the first half in the sixth minute as she poked a chip shot past the CSU defense for a 1-0 lead which the visitors took intermission.

The second half began with a bang as Quevedo drove past the Leatherneck defensive unit and got fouled inside the 18-yard box in the 48th minute before converting on the penalty kick on her first goal of the season to even the score at 1-1.

It was a short-lived tie as Western scored goals in the 50th, 57th, 60th and 78th minutes to which helped it regain and hold on to a 5-1 lead.

Quevedo continued to work as she stripped a WIU defender and lined a shot past the goalkeeper in the 80th minute to bring the Cougars within 5-2. Freshman Marissa Beale (Frazier Park, Calif./Bakersfield Christian) would convert her team-leading third goal of the season after receiving a pass from Quevedo in the final minute to end the scoring.

Freshman goalkeeper Judith Sorribes (Barcelona, Spain/Bisbe Berenguer) recorded a season-high for saves for CSU as she stopped 12 Leatherneck scoring attempts.

CSU now opens a two-game road swing through the state of Indiana which begins on Sunday afternoon in Terre Haute against Indiana State live on ESPN+ starting at 12 p.m.
