KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Chicago State volleyball received a match-high 12 kills from senior Lauryn Dela Cruz (Provo, Utah/Timpview) as it dropped a 3-0 (21-25, 24-26, 16-25) decision to host Western Michigan here tonight at the WMU Arena.

The home team posted an early 4-1 advantage in the first set before CSU tallied 10 of the next 14 points to gain an 11-8 lead following a WMU attacking error. The Broncos later broke a 13-13 tie after scoring 12 of the last 20 points played to take control of the set and capture the win for a 1-0 lead.

CSU started the second set ahead by a 3-1 margin following a kill from junior Beatriz Palmieri (Ribeirao Preto, Sao Paulo, Brazil/Professora Carlina Cacapava de Mello) before WMU would score 10 of the next 16 points to even the score at 10-10. A quick 7-3 scoring drive helped the Green and White take their biggest lead of the set at 17-13 that culminated with a kill by Dela Cruz. After Western Michigan used an 9-3 run of its own to recapture the lead at 22-20, Dela Cruz tied the score at 22-22 with a kill and a solo block on back-to-back possessions and Palmieri gave the visitors a 23-22 lead when she recorded a kill, but WMU scored four of the last six points to finish the set and take a 2-0 set lead into intermission.

The third set opened with three ties and two lead changes before a 13-4 scoring run tuned a 6-6 tie into a 19-10 Western Michigan lead behind four kills from Meredith Phillips and three kills by Cassandra Smigel.
