Cougars Defeat Eastern Illinois, 12-8, to Break Four-Game Losing Skid

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Chicago State baseball broke a four-game losing skid here this afternoon after defeating in-state rival Eastern Illinois, 12-8, at Coaches Stadium.

The Panthers opened the game with a 3-0 lead in the first inning which included Dougie Parks hitting a two-run home run to left field off CSU starter Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen).

CSU came back from the deficit in the top of the fourth by scoring four runs to gain a 4-3 advantage with junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) blasting his team-leading eighth home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field that also scored seniors Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) and Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista). A two-run homer by Jimmy Govern gave the lead back to the home team at 5-4 after the bottom half of the inning.

Three more runs crossed the plate for the Green and White in the fifth inning to recapture the lead at 7-5, highlighted by Freund's RBI single and an RBI double from Lowe.

The sixth inning began for the Cougars with freshman Reggie Brock, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) reaching base on an EIU fielding error and moved to second on a single up the middle from junior Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) before scoring on Freund's RBI single to bring their leading margin to 8-5. Paciello then hit a three-run homer to left field on the next play to increase CSU's advantage to 11-5.

Ryan Knernschield's two-RBI single highlighted a three-run seventh inning for the Panthers as they sliced their deficit to 11-8.

In the eighth inning, Chicago State brought its lead to 12-8 after Lowe hit an RBI single to left field which scored Freund, who led off the inning with a walk two plays earlier, from second base.

Senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning for the visitors and brought home Coss from first which closed the scoring.

Paciello led the Green and White by hitting a perfect 4-for-4 and drove in a career-high five runs, while Lowe hit 3-for-5 with five runs batted in. Freund finished the day going 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBI and scored four runs.

Kang (2-6) tallied five strikeouts in six innings thrown to earn the victory despite allowing five runs on seven hits. Junior reliever Yunis Halim (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) held the Panthers scoreless in the last two innings and gave up only one hit.

CSU is back in action tomorrow afternoon with a trip to Wisconsin for a non-conference battle against host Milwaukee at Henry Aaron Park that starts at 3 p.m.
