Cougars Close Weekend Non-Conference Series at Air Force

USAF ACADEMY, Colo. – The Chicago State baseball team closed out its weekend non-conference series today at Falcon Field against Air Force falling to the host Falcons by a score of 17-7.

Air Force had jumped out to an early lead after it scored four runs off CSU starting pitcher Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen) in the first inning, highlighted by Nic Ready's two-run home run to left field.

Juniors Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) recorded RBI singles in the top of the fourth to help put the Cougars on the board as part of a three-run rally to pull within 4-3, but the Falcons added seven runs to bring their leading margin to 11-3.

The Green and White tacked on a couple more runs in the top of the fifth to slice their deficit to 11-5 which included senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) recording an RBI single. Air Force responded with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and the sixth as its lead increased to 17-5.

CSU received RBI doubles from Paciello and fellow senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) in the seventh inning to close out the scoring.

Paciello hit 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBIs to lead Chicago State, while senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and junior Zach Bailey (Janesville, Wis./Parker) each went 2-for-4 at the plate. Kang (1-6) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in one inning of work. Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) recorded three strikeouts and allowed only one hit over two scoreless relief innings.

The Cougars continue their road swing on Tuesday afternoon with a trip downstate to Charleston for a non-conference battle at Eastern Illinois with the first pitch set for 3 p.m.
