CSU Bakersfield Uses Big Innings to Defeat CSU, 12-2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Host CSU Bakersfield used a pair of big scoring innings to capture its second win of this week's Western Athletic Conference baseball series with Chicago State by a score of 12-2 tonight at Hardt Field.
 
The scoring began in the second inning when junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hit a two-out single before crossing home plate on a wild pitch as the visitors broke a scoreless tie to post a 1-0 lead.
 
CSUB came back in the third inning with a three-run rally to capture the lead at 3-1 with the highlight coming from Andrew Penner as he lined an RBI double.
 
Chicago State then sliced its deficit to a run at 3-2 in the top of the fifth after junior Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) hit a leadoff single then scored three plays later on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry). Daniel Carrizosa's two-RBI single highlighted the Roadrunners tallying six runs in the bottom end of the stanza to increase their advantage to 9-2.
 
Three more runs crossed the plate for the home team in the sixth as Luis Martinez producing a two-run single to close the scoring.
 
Coss, junior Zach Bailey (Janesville, Wis./Parker) and senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) each went 1-for-3 at the plate to pace Chicago State's offense, while junior Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) took the loss on the mound after he allowed CSUB to score nine runs (four earned) on eight hits over 4.2 innings of work.
 
The Cougars will close their season in the series finale against the Roadrunners tomorrow afternoon with the first pitch set for 2 p.m.
