Double Duty Effort from Thomas Helps Cougars to 6-3 Win at CSU Bakersfield in Season Finale

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) made the most of his final collegiate game for the Chicago State baseball team as his double duty effort today helped the visiting Cougars defeat host CSU Bakersfield, 6-3, at Hardt Field in the regular season finale for both teams.

Thomas (3-6) captured the win on the mound for CSU as he posted four strikeouts over five innings of work despite allowing three runs on seven hits. He helped his cause at the plate by batting 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base and drove in two runs.

CSUB broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with an RBI double by Cole Valletta followed by RBI singles from Mark Pena and Daniel Carrizosa as it claimed an early 3-0 advantage.

Thomas opened the fourth inning for the Green and White by reaching base via a Roadrunner fielding error and moved to second on a single from fellow senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista). Both runners would score via a two-run double from senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) down the right field line as the visitors sliced their deficit to 3-2.

The Cougars then evened the score at 3-3 in the fifth after Thomas singled to right field that scored junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook), who reached base via a one-out single four plays earlier, from third base.

CSU continued its momentum in the sixth inning after loading the bases with one out before Zunkel lined an RBI single down the right field line to score Vanitvelt to take its first lead of the contest at 4-3. Junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) later scored on the next play through an RBI fielder's choice from senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) to increase the lead at 5-3.

In the ninth inning, junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, Ill./Grant) reached base on another CSUB fielding error and stole second before crossing home plate on Thomas' RBI double down the left field line to seal the win.

Vanitvelt went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs for CSU, while Zunkel also batted 2-for-4 and scored a run.

Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence), junior Edward Kang (Taoyuan, Taiwan/Pingzhen) and junior Yunis Halim (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) teamed up to hold CSUB scoreless over the final four innings and only scattered three hits in relief of Thomas. Halim earned his second save of the season after throwing a scoreless ninth inning.

The Cougars close the 2018 season with a 13-41 record and finished eighth in the WAC after posting a 7-17 conference record.
