Cougars Drop WAC Series Opener at CSU Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The Chicago State baseball team dropped the opening game of its Western Athletic Conference series to CSU Bakersfield Thursday night by a score of 14-2 in seven innings at Hardt Field.

CSU opened the scoring in the top of the second to gain a 1-0 lead after junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) earned a one-out walk and moved to second thanks to a single from fellow junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) before scoring on a wild pitch. The home team would use a suicide squeeze in the bottom half of the inning to even the score at 1-1.

CSUB then tallied four runs in the third and added five scores in the fourth to gain a 10-1 advantage.

Senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) walked to lead off the fifth inning before scoring three plays later on a passed ball to bring the Green and White within 10-2. The Roadrunners finished the scoring with four runs in the sixth inning.

The Cougars were led at the plate by senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) and junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) as both players batted 2-for-3.

Senior Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons) (1-4) took the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits through three innings of work, while freshman Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) posted a game-high three strikeouts over two relief innings.

Both teams will face off in the second game of the series on Friday night beginning at 8 p.m., central time.
