Baseball Falls at Valparaiso in Heartbreaking Fashion, 3-2

VALPARAISO, Ind. – Chicago State baseball opened its final road swing of the season here today at Valparaiso's Emory G. Bauer Field, but fell to the host Crusaders in heartbreaking fashion by a score of 3-2.

Valpo captured an early 1-0 lead in the second inning thanks to an RBI double from Scott Kapers that plated Giovanni Garbella from second base.

The Green and White responded by scoring twice in the fifth inning for a 2-1 advantage that started with junior Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) reaching base via a leadoff walk and stole second before scoring on an RBI double from freshman Reggie Brock, Jr. (Chicago, Ill./Simeon) Brock, Jr. then score a couple of plays later on an infield groundout.

The score stayed the same until the ninth inning when the home team loaded the bases before Blake Billinger lined a two-RBI single through the left side of the infield off CSU reliever Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) to end the game.

Brock paced Chicago State on the offensive end as he batted 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) finished the game hitting 2-for-4.

Freshman starting pitcher Blake Kaplan (Las Vegas, Nev./Sierra Vista) held the Crusaders to a run on seven scattered hits over 4.2 innings of work before junior reliever Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) allowed only three hits and struck out two in 3.1 scoreless innings. Gutierrez (4-3) gave up two runs on two hits in the ninth to take the loss.

The Cougars now head to California for an important three-game Western Athletic Conference series at CSU Bakersfield which begins Thursday night at 8 p.m. with a live broadcast on the WAC Digital Network as its Game of the Week.
