Cougars Come Back from Late Deficit to Down UTRGV in 10 Innings

CHICAGO – Down three runs with six outs to go, the Chicago State baseball team staged a rally to tie the score and send the game into extra innings en route to capturing a 7-6 victory over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley this afternoon at Cougar Stadium in its home finale.

The win helped CSU clinch the weekend Western Athletic Conference series over the visiting Vaqueros and pull within two games of the last spot in the upcoming WAC Tournament in Mesa, Ariz.

The Cougars gained an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning thanks to an RBI single from junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) and an RBI sacrifice fly from senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc).

UTRGV sliced its deficit to 2-1 in the second when Noah Lee posted an RBI sacrifice bunt to score Ivan Estrella, who reached base on an error to lead off the inning.

CSU responded with a run in the third inning that increased its lead to 3-1 after senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) drew a walk to open the stanza and moved to third on a single from fellow senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) before scoring on Lowe's RBI sacrifice fly to right field.

The Vaqueros evened the score at 3-3 in the fourth on a two-run double by Anthony Gomez that plated Lee and Roger Varela III. Varela would strike again in the fifth inning as he lined an RBI single to center field which scored Estrella to give the visitors a 4-3 lead.

Austin Siener hit an RBI single through the right side of the CSU infield in the sixth which brought home Gomez to hike UTRGV's lead to 5-3 and he later followed that with a solo home run to right field in the top of the eighth as the visitors' lead grew to 6-3.

The comeback began for the Green and White in the bottom of the eighth when Lowe hit a one-out single followed by a double from Vanitvelt before they scored on a two-RBI single from junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) through the right side of the infield to close within a run at 6-5.

Chicago State then tied the score at 6-6 in the ninth to send the game into an extra frame thanks to an RBI single from Lowe to left field which plated junior pinch runner Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) from third base.

Senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) opened the bottom half of the 10th with a single before advancing to third on a double from junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka). Eyring then scored the game-winning run after Coss III hit an RBI single through the right side of the infield to close the game.

Lowe paced CSU with a 3-for-4 effort at the plate and drove home three runs. Vanitvelt, Freund and Thomas each batted 2-for-4 and scored a run, and Heidenthal hit 2-for-5 with two runs batted in.

Junior Yunis Halim (Oak Lawn, Ill./Oak Lawn) captured his first win of the season after recording three strikeouts over three relief innings while allowing a run on two hits. Thomas threw five strikeouts during the first four innings of the contest in his final home contest.

Prior to the game, the Cougars honored Vanitvelt, Eyring, Freund and Thomas along with Grant Trower (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Cardinal Gibbons), Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista), Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) and Justin Wyant (Marion, Iowa/Linn-Mar) for their contributions to the team in a senior day ceremony.

Chicago State now opens its final road swing of the regular season on Tuesday afternoon with a non-conference contest at Valparaiso beginning at 3 p.m.
