Baseball Drops 8-4 Home Decision to UT Rio Grande Valley

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball dropped an 8-4 decision to Western Athletic Conference foe UT Rio Grande Valley today at Cougar Stadium.

UTRGV opened the scoring in the second inning when Zach Parks lined an RBI single to center field off CSU starting pitcher Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond) that scored Austin Siener for an early 1-0 lead.

The visitors added three runs in the top of the third, highlighted by an RBI double from Anthony Gomez to increase its lead to 4-0, but the Green and White got on the board in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an RBI single from Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) which brought home junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) to pull within 4-1.

In the top of the sixth, the Vaqueros scored three more runs which included Gomez hitting a two-run single. CSU sliced its deficit to 7-3 in the latter half of the stanza after senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) blasted a two-run home run to right field that also scored fellow senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry).

Freund led off the eighth inning with a walk and scored three plays later on Vanitvelt's RBI sacrifice fly to center field to bring the Cougars within three at 7-4.

UTRGV tallied its last run in the ninth after loading the bases with two walks and a single before Noah Lee was hit by a pitch to drive home a run.

Vanitvelt finished the game batting 1-for-3 and drove in three runs, while Freund also batted 1-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for CSU.

Fitka (1-4) took the loss after giving up four runs on four hits over three innings of work and freshman reliever Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) tallied a game-leading seven strikeouts in the final six innings thrown.

The series finale will take place tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. with a pre-game senior day ceremony being held around 11:40 a.m.
