Smith Finishes Fifth in Women’s Shot Put for CSU at WAC Outdoors

Senior Shedella Smith took fifth in the shot put Friday at the WAC Outdoor Championships

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior Shedella Smith (Victorville, Calif./Hesperia) fared well for the Chicago State track and field team today after finishing fifth in the women's shot put here this afternoon during the third day of the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships at Rock Chalk Park.

Smith produced a throw of 42-0 (12.80 meters) on her fourth throw to claim Second Team All-WAC honors and she is the first CSU thrower to score points in a throwing event since Jaya Emerson placed seventh in the discus in 2014.

In addition, five Cougars have qualified for the finals of several running events that will take place tomorrow.

Sophomore Ricordo McKenzie (Montego Bay, Jamaica/Cornwall College) will look to contend for conference crowns in two different events after placing fifth in the men's 100-meter dash at a time of 10.47 and later finished seventh in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 21.49

Senior Jocindra Glee (Orlando, Fla./Evans) placed second in the women's 400-meter dash after recording a time of 57.14, while junior Carlton Sims (Gary, Ind./Westside) finished fifth in the men's 400m event thanks to posting a time of 49.95

In the women's 200-meter event, freshman Toniann Ewen (Orlando, Fla./Evans) crossed the finish line with a time of 24.43 to advance to the finals. Senior Asia Johnson (Guthrie, Okla./Guthrie) finished with a prelim time of 14.11 in the women's 100-meter hurdles to gain a spot in tomorrow's final.

The final day of competition for CSU at Rock Chalk Park will take place on Saturday afternoon.
