CSU Baseball Defeats Northern Colorado, 7-4, for WAC Series Win

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball utilized timely hitting and strong defense to win this weekend's Western Athletic Conference series today at Cougar Stadium after defeating visiting Northern Colorado by a score of 7-4.

The visitors opened the contest with an early 1-0 lead in the top of the second after Jack Pauley led off with a single up the middle and advanced to third on a double by Cole Maltese before scoring on an RBI sacrifice fly from Alex Kiel.

CSU responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs to gain a 2-1 advantage that started with back-to-back singles from junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) and senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) before junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant) drove home Lowe with an RBI single. Vanitvelt followed that by stealing home on a double steal with Heidenthal as he took second base.

In the sixth inning, the Cougars added two runs to increase their leading margin to 4-1 which began with singles from senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) and Lowe in consecutive at-bats. Vanitvelt scored Paciello from second with an RBI bunt single and Lowe scored on the next play via an RBI single from junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) to center field.

The home team loaded the bases in the eighth inning as Lowe was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single from Vanitvelt before scoring on a wild pitch to bring the lead at 5-1. Freund then lined a two-run double to bring home Zunkel and Vanitvelt to increase CSU's advantage to 7-1.

UNC came back with a rally in the ninth inning thanks to a three-run home run by Brett Minnick to pull within 7-4, but freshman relief pitcher Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) sealed the win for the Green and White with a strikeout of Matt Burkhart.

Vanitvelt finished the game batting 3-for-4 and scored two runs to lead CSU's 12-hit effort at the plate followed by Lowe as he batted 2-for-2 with three runs scored. Heidenthal hit 2-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, and Freund went 2-for-5 with two doubles.

Senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) (2-6) held the Bears to a run on five scattered hits over six innings of work to earn the victory while posting a game-high eight strikeouts. Cumming earned his first collegiate save by throwing the last three innings and struck out four despite allowing three runs on five hits.

CSU opens a six-game road swing on Tuesday afternoon with a trip to Evanston, Ill., for a mid-week rematch against local rival Northwestern at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park that begins at 3:30 p.m.
