Baseball Opens Six-Game Road Swing with 9-7 Defeat at Northwestern

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball opened a six-game non-conference road swing here this afternoon as it suffered a 9-7 defeat to host Northwestern at Miller Park.

After the first two innings went scoreless, the Cougars got on the board in the third inning when junior Daulton Ryans (Mishawaka, Ind./Mishawaka) blasted an RBI single to center field off NU starting pitcher Ryan Bader to bring home fellow junior Zach Bailey (Janesville, Wis./Parker) from second to gain a 1-0 advantage.

CSU hiked its lead to 4-0 in the top of the fourth after loading the bases via walks before senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) lined a bases-clearing, three-RBI double to left field, but the Wildcats pulled within a run at 4-3 when they scored three in the bottom half of the inning which was highlighted by an RBI single from Alex Erro.

The visitors stuck again in the top of the sixth to hike its leading margin to 6-3 thanks to Freund's two-run home run to left field. NU closed within 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth on a solo homer by Jack Kelly that landed in right field.

An RBI single from Bailey in the top of the seventh scored fellow junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) to increase the visitor's advantage to 7-4 before Leo Kaplan hit a three-run homer to left field to even the score at 7-7 in the home team's half of the inning.

NU scored two more runs in the eighth inning to capture its first lead of the game and sealed the win defensively in the ninth inning.

CSU had three players produce multi-hit efforts for the day with Freund hitting 2-for-5 with five RBIs. Heidenthal batted 2-for-5 with a double and a stolen base, and senior Matt Paciello (Wellington, Fla./Park Vista) went 2-for-4 at the plate. Taking the loss on the mound was senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) (4-2) as he allowed five runs on five hits over 1.1 innings in relief.

The Cougars continue their six-game road swing in Colorado with a three-game weekend series at Air Force which begins Friday at 4 p.m.
