Lowe’s Two HR’s, Five RBI Leads CSU in 11-8 Comeback Win over UNC

CHICAGO – Junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville) batted 3-for-5 with two home runs and five RBI as host Chicago State came back from a five-run deficit to post a dramatic 11-8 victory today over visiting Northern Colorado at Cougar Stadium.

The visitors broke a scoreless tie in the second inning with three runs to take an early 3-0 lead, highlighted by Austin Miller's RBI double down the right field line off Cougar starting pitcher Joe Fitka (Anchorage, Alaska/Diamond).

NC later took advantage of a pair of Cougar errors to tack on two more runs in the third to hike its advantage at 5-0.

Four runs crossed the plate for the Green and White as it pulled within a run at 5-4 in the fifth inning. Junior Tyler Zunkel (Lombard, Ill./Willowbrook) opened the scoring when he drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded for the first run before senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) dropped an RBI single to left center that scored fellow senior Jacob Vanitvelt (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc). Senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) blasted a two-RBI single up the middle which brought home Zunkel and junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant).

The Bears added two runs in the top of the sixth to hike its lead to 7-4, but a one-out solo home run from Lowe to right center in the bottom half of the inning sliced the Cougars' deficit to 7-5.

An RBI double from Tyler Yamaguchi to right field brought home Evan Johnson increased NC's advantage back to three runs at 8-5 after the seventh inning. CSU would score twice in the eighth inning thanks to RBI singles from Lowe and Heidenthal to close within a run at 8-7.

In the bottom of the ninth, the home team opened with junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) hitting an RBI single through the left side of the infield that plated junior Jon Coss III (Richmond, Texas/Reagan) and tied the score at 8-8 with one out.

Lowe then struck again with runners at second and third by hitting a three-run homer to center field off NC reliever Connor Leedholm to end the game.

Freund finished the game batting 2-for-5 at the plate with two runs batted in, while Cox also hit 2-for-5 and scored twice.

Senior Robert Gutierrez (Chicago, Ill./St. Laurence) improved his season record to 4-1 with the win after recording two strikeouts over 3.2 relief innings while allowing a run on three hits. Fitka posted four strikeouts over 5.1 innings thrown before giving way to Gutierrez.

The series finale from Cougar Stadium will take place tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
