Cougars Fall to Northern Colorado in WAC Series Opener, 11-7

CHICAGO – Chicago State baseball opened its Western Athletic Conference weekend series against conference foe Northern Colorado today at Cougar Stadium with an 11-7 defeat after coming back from a double-digit deficit earlier in the contest.

NC jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as it loaded the bases against CSU starter Dylan Cumming (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) before Cole Maltese was hit by a pitch that plated Austin Miller from third base.

Miller hit an RBI single in the second inning as part of a two-run rally which increased the Bears' advantage to 3-0 and he later belted a three-run home run to right field as the visitors hiked their leading margin to 6-0.

Two more runs crossed the plate in the fourth and fifth innings which brought NC's lead to double digits at 10-0. CSU scored its first run in the bottom of the fifth after senior Zach Thomas (Joliet, Ill./Joliet West) lined an RBI double through the right side of the infield that brought home fellow senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) to pull within 10-1.

The visitors added another run in the sixth when Jack Pauley drew an RBI walk with the bases loaded to bring its lead to 11-1.

The Cougars scored four runs in the seventh innings to close within 11-5 that was highlighted by a two-run single by junior Tyler Lowe (Northville, Mich./Northville). CSU tallied two runs in the eighth inning to close the scoring via junior Matt Cox (Bettendorf, Iowa/Bettendorf) scoring on a wild pitch and senior Cody Freund (McHenry, Ill./McHenry) hitting an RBI infield groundout to bring home junior Nick Heidenthal (McHenry, IL/Grant).

Senior Brandon Eyring (Mesa, Ariz./Mesa) had a career day at the plate for the Green and White as he hit 3-for-3 with a double and scored two runs, and Thomas finished the day hitting 2-for-4 with a double.

Cumming (1-8) allowed three runs on four hits over 1.2 innings of work in taking the loss on the mound. Junior reliever Dean Youngblood (Melissa, Texas/Melissa) held UNC to a run on five hits in four innings thrown while recording two strikeouts and two walks.

Both teams will resume the series tomorrow afternoon with the second game beginning at 3 p.m.
